Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the value of scrap silver?

Weigh the silver in grams, multiply by its purity (0.925 for sterling) and by the spot price per gram. The spot price is quoted per troy ounce, which is 31.1035 grams.

How much will a buyer pay for sterling silver?

Scrap buyers often pay around 70–85% of melt value for sterling, and less for small lots. Know your melt value first so you can judge an offer.

Can I weigh sterling flatware with the handles?

Hollow knife handles are usually filled with cement or resin, so their weight is not all silver. Solid forks and spoons can be weighed as they are.

What is the difference between sterling and silver plate?

Sterling is 92.5% silver all the way through. Silver plate is a thin layer of silver over a base metal and has very little scrap value.
